Today I want to talk a little about Azael.

Every now and then I like to write a story with a bad boy.  In the Carnality Series, Azael is one of those bad boys. He’s not the kind of guy used to taking no for an answer. He sees, he wants, he takes. Seduction is his game, and he feeds on souls who give in to their lusts. If not for Jezebel, he’d likely drain his victims dry. But a soft spot for the succubus keeps him in check and our bad boy where he needs to be, under Jezebel’s thumb.

In mythology, the nature of an incubus is different from culture to culture. In some cultures he visits sleeping women, inducing sexual dreams and feeding on the energy they produce from lust, sometimes draining them of their lives, other times leaving them in a coma from which they never wake. Have you ever had one of those dreams you didn’t want to wake from? That is where the roots of this myth are thought to come from.

In other cultures, he seduces his victims and lives with them, drawing off their life energies to survive. The victims often don’t know they are under the spell of an incubus. Sometimes he has an entirely different reason for taking up a relationship with a human woman. Sometimes he wants to father a child, as in the case of Merlin, who was thought to be the son of an incubus.
One of the earliest written records of incubus, come from Mesopotamia and the Epic of Gilgamesh. Like Merlin, Gilgamesh’s father is also thought to be an incubus or Lilu. Azael is Sumerian, an ancient incubus that has tracked the one woman he can’t walk away from through the centuries. From the Sumerian legends, my bad boy was born.

He’s powerful. He’s temptation incarnate. He is lust. But, like any demon, there are rules he has to play by. Azael can’t interfere with free will. No matter how badly he wants a soul, he can’t draw life energies without permission. In my Carnality series you will hear him ask, do you give freely. Those that say yes, often find they’ve bitten off more than they can chew.

So, I hope you’ll check out the first three stories with my bad boy, Azael. My hopes are to continue this series with Azael and Jezebel, giving you more of the temptation called incubus.
