I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to join the awesome writers here at Paranormal Romantics! I’ll be popping up with a blog post on the thirteenth of every month from now on – not only do I not have triskaidekaphobia (fear of the #13), the last three digits of my driver’s license are “666”. So apparently bad numbers do good things for me LOL. Since today is Mother’s Day, I thought I’d give you a true story about my Mother, with a slight paranormal twist, ok? (Next month I’ll happily talk more about myself and my paranormal and SF books LOL)
When I was in high school an indeterminate time ago, our Spanish Club worked very hard to raise enough money to take a field trip to Mexico City over spring break. (This was in a time before all the drug wars and etc.). Since we lived in Alabama, we traveled by bus. I don’t know how it is in Mexico these days but when we went, the driving in some areas was somewhat informal, erratic and at your own risk, or so it seemed to me. Didja ever see the scene in “Romancing the Stone” where Joan Wilder is on that bus that isn’tgoing to Cartagena? Always reminds me of our trip!
We had a Greyhound bus until we reached the border and after that, we were on a chartered, locally owned bus. So we’re driving through the night to reach some destination on the tour when our bus driver played chicken with a rundown old truck. Not sure who won, but we ended up heeled over in a ditch, shaken and bruised but unharmed. Nice guy G, who had a crush on me, and sexy senior, bad boy W, who of course I had a crush on, got me out of the bus and up to the road’s shoulder. (Yes,they helped the other girls too but hey, I’m the main character in this story!)
I looked at my watch – it was 2:45 AM Alabama time – and said to the guys, “Wow, I’m so not telling my mom about this or she’d totally freak out.”
Eventually the charter company got us another bus, we went on our way. When we finally got to the hotel, hours later, there was a message for me to call my Dad at the office back in Alabama. Now at this time, international calling was a VERY big deal, very expensive, not an easily done thing and I was terrified something bad had happened at home. So the hotel switchboard operator and I managed to get through to my Dad and the first thing he said was, “Were you in an accident?”
“Why do you ask?” I said, stalling for time.
“Because your mother sat bolt upright out of a sound sleep at 2:45 this morning and told me you’d been in a bus crash but that you were all right, then laid down and went back to sleep.”
I STILL get goose bumps thinking about it! Mothers know, don’t they? Happy Mother’s Day to you!
